Cookie-Banner

For years, we’ve been annoyed by cookie banners asking us to agree to this or that. Technologists have also been suggesting for years how this problem could be solved—for example, through a fixed setting in the browser. But the power of Big Tech companies seems limitless. To further enforce their advertising strategies, even a simplification proposal from the EU isn’t getting through.

The situation at the EU level is as follows: EU member states want to simplify the constant requests for “consent” — which annoy us and wear us down to the point where we just agree to everything. However, website operators are opposed to a simple technical solution. Germany, too, supports this solution and has already put it into effect as of April 2025 through a Consent Management Regulation. However, the websites’ software does not (yet) comply with it.

Now, more and more EU countries are moving to accommodate website operators by allowing the use of cookies for service provision, audience measurement, or IT security without the user’s consent. Particularly in the first category, there are many reasons why a specific cookie is indispensable for the provider. This further restricts user autonomy and makes the tracking of their activities invisible to them, yet it continues unabated, and their online behavior can be aggregated and analyzed in central databases.
