Surveillance like in China
“We'll manage that too,” one might think when reading the report on China's social credit system on Telepolis.de. There, we also learn that the German Schufa was indeed the model on which this system was based. Now, the technical capabilities have grown immensely in recent years. In major cities like Tianjin, police officers are already wearing AI-powered smart glasses while on patrol. This gives them constant access to owners’ data by scanning license plates or through direct facial scans. Weighing just 40g, the glasses are no longer a hindrance to the wearer. The only limitation on their use is the battery life, which allows for 2 hours of continuous operation. Unlike body cameras, these glasses make it much easier to analyze objects without blurring. Little is known about the capabilities of the software packages behind this surveillance craze. At worst, they are likely on par with Palantir’s capabilities, which several federal states intend to procure for our police forces. The sheer number of permanently installed video cameras — several hundred million nationwide — thus reaches a level of surveillance density comparable to that of the Greater London area, where approximately 630,000 to 1 million cameras are installed. One can only speculate on the wisdom of the effort and cost of such nationwide networked systems to prevent crime compared to alternative measures in the social sector.
