06.07.2026 Zentraler Angriff auf die Informationsfreiheit

A Major Attack on Freedom of Information

“As a nonprofit organization, we are committed to peace, civil rights, and human rights, as well as freedom of information and net neutrality” is stated right at the top of our website, and we mean it. Because in addition to upholding human rights and protecting the privacy of every individual, it is also essential that we be able to understand the actions of those in power and have the right to information when things are unclear. An important tool for achieving this is the Freedom of Information Act (IFG). Now, at their meeting four days ago, the coalition factions decided to repeal this very law.

The IFG has recently demonstrated that it is urgently needed by civil society and should even be expanded. In this context, Frag_den_Staat.de points to the latest scandals: “Time and again, politicians from the CDU/CSU — such as Jens Spahn, Philipp Amthor, and Katherina Reiche — have stood out for their lack of transparency, lobbying, and other scandals that could only be uncovered thanks to the IFG. Citizens’ right to information is a thorn in their side. That is why they want to abolish our right to information.”

The coalition can only do this if it reaches a consensus. So we call on the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag: Stop the plans to abolish the IFG!

Frag_den_Staat.de also cites its own work as evidence of the necessity of the Freedom of Information Act (IFG): “Since 2006, government agencies have been required to release documents upon request under the Freedom of Information Act (IFG) — whether they be contracts, internal directives, or emails. More than 300,000 requests have been submitted via FragDenStaat since then. The IFG has become a central pillar of democracy in Germany.”

So sign the petition now and stop this undemocratic plan!
