05.05.2026 Datenweitergabe an die USA

Privacy and data protection are being eroded

Fifteen years ago, people were outraged when the government tried to track who communicated with whom and when (VDS). Today, it’s about our faces, our financial data, and our movement patterns. And now the EU Commission even wants to allow U.S. authorities to access our political views and our “origin.”

First, there is the difference between wanting to and being able to — the U.S. may want many things, but the problem is that this data is simply available to the authorities. There must be a purpose for every instance of data storage, and we cannot recall the US’s request for access being cited as a purpose in any law passed in recent years. This means that the entire request and the EU’s consideration of complying with it constitute an unlawful expansion of the intended purpose.

We remain outraged

Even after 15 years, we have not come to terms with the authorities’ senseless pursuit of data from our private lives. We must acknowledge, however, that this piecemeal approach is succeeding. Constant surveillance is increasingly becoming part of our lives. Even as the demands grow ever more absurd (facial recognition and political views), they are being met instead of invoking the fundamental and human rights of every individual. According to the draft published by the British civil liberties organization Statewatch, the planned EU agreement with the US goes far beyond the US demands known to date. For example, the US could also make such data available to third countries — a nightmare for any former migrant, as it could endanger their family in their home country.

Doesn’t anyone realize that with laws like these, we are creating the perfect conditions for right-wing forces in the EU to govern — and suppress any resistance — with ease ...
