We need the PRIVATE PRISON INFORMATION ACT
Actually, we want much more of course, namely a transparency law that discloses all actions in the name of public authorities. We have already reported about our commitment to a Berliner Transparenzgesetz - the collection of signatures will start on 3rd of August.
In the US the situation is even more dramatic, because there even more public tasks were put into private profit-oriented hands. The private prison industry in the USA is a profitable line of business on the back of the prisoners. Information about what is going on in the prisons and even more about the working conditions and profits of these companies is hardly available.
The Private Prison Information Act would create a critically important mechanism by which federal agencies can ensure that non-federal entities provide the information necessary for the government to respond to FOIA requests relating to prison and detention facilities, while still allowing for the protection of confidential information. Please support this important legislation and work with your colleagues in the Senate and the House to push for immediate passage.
Congress needs to act to demand accountability from the private prison industry. Private prisons are being run without sufficient oversight, thanks to a loophole that allows them to not disclose information.
