Vigil for prisoners and against prison industry and death penalty
Today we met at the US embassy and demonstrated for Rodney Reed.
We want to demonstrate on Sunday ,March 1 at 15h in front of the US Embassy in Berlin against the planned execution of Rodney Reed !This rally is organized by the Alliance "Freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal" .
The Call
Rodney Reed is a prisoner on death row, the US State of Texas wants to execute on 5 March 2015.The young African American was sentenced in 1996 to a brutal rape of a white woman, however, was murdered by her former partner , a police officer.
This policeman currently sits in prison for rape in office in another case until 2018.We want the Texas Governor Abbott and the Parol Board ask for pardon to suspend the scheduled execution of Rodney Reed for March 5, 2015 and finally allow a complete DNA investigation of the offense that led to Rodney Reeds conviction.
Rodney Reed is one of 3,000 detainees in US deathrow who had little chance for a fair trial , because they could not afford a qualified defence.
Come on Sunday, March 5 at 15h before the US Embassy in Berlin !

For 28 Years For Selling Kids to the Prison System
Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table. The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has overturned some 4,000 convictions issued by him between 2003 and 2008, claiming he violated the constitutional rights of the juveniles – including the right to legal counsel and the right to intelligently enter a plea. Some of the juveniles he sentenced were as young as 10-years old.
Ciavarella was convicted of 12 counts, including racketeering, money laundering, mail fraud and tax evasion. He was also ordered to repay $1.2 million in restitution.
His "kids for cash" program has revealed that corruption is indeed within the prison system, mostly driven by the growth in private prisons seeking profits by any means necessary.

(s. Zeitschrift stern vom 19.2.2015, S.130)
